United post match thought

Arsenal salvaged a point in Old Trafford despite in overall United dominated the game, especially in the first half, when the Gunners could not able to create single attempt at all. Arsenal were able to equalized, thanks to Tyler Blackett's own goal from Theo Walcott's cross. Arsenal remains on the 3rd place with 71 points from 36 games, while United stays on the 4th place with two points less but one game played more than Arsenal.

Generally, Arsenal were being second best and United controlled the possession. The introduction of Walcott and Wilshere on the mid of the second half rejuvenated the Gunners' performance. Only after this substitution - with United looked tired as the game wore on - Arsenal looked threatening.

There are several take-ons from this game

1. Stagnant Line-up

Same Line-Up, yet again

Yet another unchanged line-up named by Wenger for this match: Ospina; Bellerin, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal; Coquelin, Cazorla; Ramsey, Ozil, Alexis; Giroud. It has been the same for the recent weeks despite blip in Swansea. While I understand Wenger wants the first team to settle, I would say changing one or two players per game would not do harm. Not changing the line-up could potentially give the sense of safety of the starters, giving them complacency and I think this might be the reason on the decline of the performance on the last two matches. If they know their place in the starting line-up is not safe, they would fight more for it instead of feeling safe because the manager keeps playing same team. 

Rotation could help Arsenal to prevent injury as well as to help the jaded players. Cazorla could do good with having one game off as he is one of the most played midfield this season, and so could Alexis. David Ospina is a good keeper, but I feel on the last two games he could do better. Szczesny did make mistake on the earlier of the season, but I think we could give him more chance. He has a faster reflex compared to Ospina and with a taller height, he has a longer reach. I feel he could have prevented Gomis' goal last week and also Herrera's shot today.

2. Aaron Ramsey is NOT a right winger

Aaron Ramsey has been deployed in the right side of midfield for the last six games, and he already expressed that he would prefer to play centrally. This match showed clearly that he is more dangerous from the middle rather than playing from the wing. After Walcott and Wilshere coming in for Bellerin and Cazorla. Ramsey and Wilshere played in the middle and the flow of the game getting better. Last season, Ramsey was our best player and he was doing that from the middle.

I would say we could afford to rotate Santi Cazorla - who looked very ineffective - in the middle of the park and give Ramsey the game from his preferred position. From that position he influenced the game more and started the equalizer from his long range pass to Walcott. He was also involved in at least three attacks on the final 15 minutes when he plays from the middle, while he was struggling to make impacts from the right flank.

3. Challenging for Title

Maybe Thierry Henry is right, this team needs few players to win the title. Olivier Giroud might be banging goals few weeks back but he looks short of ideas in the recent weeks. Now I might agree with Thierry Henry about additional striker Arsenal need before they can challenge for the highest prize. Giroud is not a bad player, but he is a very static striker. His movement is not the best, especially because his pace could not help him. 

There were some occasion where there was a lot of spaces behind United defender and David da Gea, but then we could not sent a decent through pass to Giroud because he was too slow to race with the defender. He would be useful to break the deadlock against the team defending very deep as he provides decent flick. But he could do better in his final touch as he wasted at least two golden chances today. A pacy striker who has a great touch would be useful for us in the team. He could complement Giroud, or in the other tactics, he could be upfront alone.

Another thing is consistency. He could hit the best form in five games before switched off for the next few games. That what happened this season and last season. 

5. Hector Bellerin's Inexperience

Ashley Young run rampant from the left flank, leaving Bellerin exposed due to his inexperience. He has done quite well this season, but seeing him run ragged by Young showed that his inexperience in the big match. Mathieu Debuchy has a better defending compared to the Spaniard, but Bellerin is still 20 years old and there is still more from him. He could do better in defending, especially against tricky winger like Young.

To sum up, this crucial one point through a lucky game made us could comfortably finish third, but there is room for improvement in the next game.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal Post-Match Analysis

Arsenal eased to a 3-0 victory in Villa Park despite a first half-hour struggle against lively Aston Villa. Mesut Ozil opened the scoreline after receiving a sublime through pass by Danny Welbeck and coolly slotted past Brad Guzan. One minute later, Ozil's cross found Danny Welbeck, who applied a simple finish and registered his first goal for the Gunners. Shortly after, Kieran Gibbs' cross forced Aly Cissokho to beat Brad Guzan and gifted Arsenal the third goal. Three goals in three minutes destroyed Aston Villa's confidence and let Arsenal to dominate completely the game.

1. 4-2-3-1 and Ozil

Finally Arsene Wenger decided to revert to 4-2-3-1 after a bad game against Dortmund with 4-1-4-1 formation. The change of formation accommodated Ozil back to his favourite position in the number 10 role behind the striker. The German looked very comfortable playing there, linking up with Danny Welbeck very well, as both exchanges assist to one another in this game. Hope this kind of performance can give Ozil more confidence. He has been criticized very heavily in the recent times and I believe he can be great in the correct formation and position. He's definitely not a winger because it gave him more responsibility to track back and he ain't that good in defending. Should Ozil come back to his best, it would be more fascinating to see more Ozil's exquisite passes in the coming week, especially with likes of Welbeck, Chamberlain, Campbell, and Alexis on the wing or upfront.

2. Defence Worry

I believe a good team would start at the back, though Arsenal in 2004 didn't have that concept in mind. Last season, Arsenal were fairly solid at the back at most of the time, except when they choked in away games against big team. However, this season they looked a bit shaky in each games, especially in set pieces. This is also might be caused by injury of Giroud, who often goes back to help defending set pieces. We now only have one towering player  in the Per Mertesacker.

Disregard today's scoreline first and you can see in the first 20 minutes, Aston Villa were getting chances by chances. Ciaran Clark could've easily opened the score when Arsenal went sleeping on defending Tom Cleverley's free kick. Lucky, Wojciech Szczesny were brilliant, throwing his body to deny it. Alan Hutton got a free header on near post which was - luckily - over the bar. Laurent Koscielny was much improved from his three poor display against Leicester, City, and Dortmund respectively. The shaky defence might be also caused by the changes in the back four. For the last three games, Wenger always play different player in the back four due to various reason. After the first team back four is somewhat settled, there are possibility they would be more solid.

3. Ramsey

He hasn't been hitting his best performance this season, but today was his worst form in this season, or even for the past 2 years. I haven't seen Ramsey this frustrating for long time. He misplaced few numbers of passes, and even made a simple pass to a corner for the opposition. He gave a balance when he play deep like today, but it might be a good idea to rest him for a while in the coming weeks, especially Wilshere now is playing quite well and can fill in the gap if Ramsey is rested.

Summary: This might sounds a bit pessimistic but those are three things I would like to highlight. There were a lot of positives, mostly because the shift of formation and Ozil back to his natural position. I was hoping Wenger rested Ozil today but it seems that Arsene want the German to have more time in pitch to regain his confidence. Hope Arsenal can bring today's good performance to the next game agains Southampton in Capital One Cup and more importantly, the North London Derby against Sp*rs next week.

Post Match Thought on Everton vs Arsenal.

Arsenal grabbed a hard-earned point in the Goodison Park after they scored two late goals via Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud. Everton, for most of the time, was the better of the two teams, but two decisive moments changed the game, especially after Arsene Wenger introduced Santi Cazorla and Joel Campbell in expense of Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

1. A striker is needed in the team

Like it or not, Arsenal's current system need Olivier Giroud, or at least a support striker. With Alexis playing upfront in the first half, Arsenal can't really build up the play, as no one waiting in the box to receive the ball. As Everton played tightly at the back, Alexis was forced to drop very deep, leaving empty space on the box, thus every time Arsenal got a decent position on the flanks, they have no one to aim for. It was an easy job for Everton to defend from that kind of attacks. This is however, changed with the presence of Giroud. A pivotal target man, who even like to drop deep, he tends to wait in the box. This unsettled Everton's defence, especially after the introduction of Cazorla and Joel Campbell. Two of the goals for Arsenal came from the crossing and it's no coincidence that the goals came after his introduction.

I'm not saying we don't need more striker. Giroud is a great striker at its best but he often had a day off, while Sanogo is too raw. An addition striker is welcomed but I feel like we need a quality defensive midfielder who can play as a defender more than a striker.

2. Midfield Compositon

I feel strange that Wenger keeps playing Jack Wilshere in the starting line-up despite not playing well recently. Despite playing well in the Community Shield, Jack lost his form on his last three games. Seeing how we play better with Cazorla on the hole, Wenger might want to think to sacrifice the Jack for Santi, even though he's a bit inconsistent. Though I hope Wilshere can do a Ramsey after discovering a great form through serial of criticism in the first team.

In addition, I see Ozil wasn't really comfortable playing down the left wing today. It's true that he was played on the same position in German National Team and he likes to run through flanks when he is played on the hole. However, playing on the wing gave you extra responsibility to track back the winger, and in this game Ozil lost the plot when he let Coleman took the cross that lead to the opening goal. I hope Wenger would put Ozil back to the number 10 role, and give him the freedom he would like to have. I don't want to see Ozil doing an Arshavin who was forced to played out wide and lost his confidence and touch.

3. Inconsistency

It was another inconsistency shown by the squad as they crumbled on Everton's fluid attack on the first half and could've scored more than two goals, but lucky they didn't. It was not only about the team or the strategies, but also the individuals that plays for the team. Each of them can play really well in one game but invisible for the next game. Giroud, Sanogo, Cazorla, Wilshere. These are at least four names I remember playing well in one game and disappears in the next game, or vice versa. This is a vital area Arsene Wenger must think of how to solve as this would be the most critical issues to win the League.

Top of the Table for New Year

It was another ugly win but ultimately this win brings Arsenal to the top of the table. Both Newcastle and Arsenal were not bright in the first half, failed to threaten other goals except for the last moment for Newcastle when they hit the bar from the corner. Arsenal was the more effective side, scoring goal from their first clear cut chance. Theo Walcott chipped the freekick and Giroud found the room between Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini and headed it. It was his first goal for the last few games, and surely it would gave him boost of confidence to find the net. Newcastle was pushing hard for equalizer in the closing stage of the game, but Arsenal defended well and ensured 3 points, as well the top spot of Premier League till New Year, regardless of Chelsea vs Liverpool result.

It was a really tough test for Arsenal. We came to top six team's home without two of our best player, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, and our captain who are usually ready on the bench was out because of illness. Newcastle was unbeaten for the last 6 matches and they had beaten Manchester United in Old Trafford, where we lost 0-1. In addition, Olivier Giroud wasn't particularly sharp in front of goal lately, and Gooner has been wanting him to be dropped from the team, but Wenger didn't do so, a decision that later gave Arsenal three points as Giroud scored the winning goal. From the brighter side, Koscielny was back from injury and partnered Mertesacker in the defence.

The first half was one of our worst attacking performance, but our defence was solid as usual, the passes were not linked well, and most of our chance are from long, weak shot. Walcott nearly find a good space on one occasion but the pass from Rosicky was too far from him. But generally it was a boring first half. Newcastle on the other hand was not bright either but did came close to scoring twice at the injury time of the first half. Second half was almost the same and Arsenal were not sharp in the final third of the Newcastle penalty area, but Walcott was able to send a simple - yet terrific - freekick to find Giroud and the Frenchman made a touch to beat Tim Krul.

Giroud found goal, finally, and this goal hopefully will boost his confidence and silence some critics. He did look a bit short of confidence after miskicked an easy chance after the goal. The backfour is once again solid, particularly Sagna and Mertesacker who are faultless today. Mertesacker did few crucial interception and clearances as we registered a clean sheet (finally). Koscielny might have given away a ball away led to dangerous chance for Newcastle, but otherwise he was solid. Gibbs was uncomfortable down the right as most of Newcastle attack was from that side, but still delivered a decent performance. Szczesny funny moment almost cost us 3 points when he kicked the ball straight to Loic Remy but luckily the ball out of the play from deflection. It's not the first time he did that (remember that kick to Sturridge in our 2-0 victory against Liverpool).  He must be more careful next matches not to do the same, next mistake might lead to a goal (well like Schalke's goalkeeper against Chelsea).

Another ugly win, and we have faced all of the Premier League teams and stayed on top. Next few games are a winnable games if our feet can be kept on the ground and play our normal game. Can we say that we can challenge for title? Yes we have half of the season again till the finish line, but as Wenger said, "If you don't believe yourself, you can't go anywhere". I think Arsenal have potential to win something at the end of the season, if we can maintain the winning habit. One or two purchase at January might help us to keep the top spot.

West Ham - Arsenal Post Match Thought

Arsenal grabbed a nervy win at Upton Park as they came from behind 3-1 against West Ham squad who last week knocked out Sp*rs from League Cup. Arsenal dominated first half but failed to score any, but West Ham opened the score just after the break after Charlton Cole capitalized Wojciech Szczesny's mistake. The polish keeper spilled Kevin Nolan's shot and gave West Ham lead. Arsenal struggled to find equalizer as West Ham as the home team defended well, and even they nearly scored twice which went wide from the target. However, Podolski introduction changed the game, as Theo Walcott equalized few minutes after that, as West Ham keeper Adrian failed to make a routine save on Walcott's tame shot. Podolski made a wonderful cross headed by Theo Walcott to make it 2-1 for Arsenal. Podolski impact was not only there, he sealed three points from a stunning finish on the 79th minutes, a lay off from Olivier Giroud.

It was a really nervy game for Arsenal. We might have dominated the game, but West Ham got some great chances as our defending was not as tight as usual. Arsenal really suffered defensively especially after West Ham opened the scoreline. Lucky they were not clinical in front of goal and we were able to find the equalizer before they scored another one.That equalizer was the turning point of the game. Arsenal dominated the possession and chances more and West Ham looked losing confidence. Only three minutes between Walcott first and second goal showed the impact of that equalizer, and after that West Ham lost the plot. It was a nice mentality test to see whether Arsenal can challenge for title or not. Coming from behind is a definite trait a champion must have and it's good to see Arsenal showed it today.

There are few players I would like to talk about on this game.

1. Santi Cazorla

Santi Cazorla enjoyed a fairly good game, and he looked much more sharper in the middle. He started on the left side but shifted after Podolski replaced injured Ramsey. Cazorla was playing in the Ramsey role for few minutes before Flamini's entrance, but he looked much more comfortable there instead of playing wide. He was not bad in the wing but in his natural position in the center he can stamp his authority on the game, getting space between midfield and defend and spraying the passes. If he continues playing like this, Wenger might be forced to play Ozil on the wing and Cazorla played centrally. 

2. Lukas Podolski

What an impact for a player who has been away from the team for few months, one goal and one assist. He offered more direct play and width compared to Cazorla and Wilshere, who are naturally a central attacking midfielder. He can play centrally as a striker, if Wenger decided to bench Giroud. In addition, Podolski is a more clinical finisher compared to Giroud, although he can't offer aerial strength like the Frenchman. His return can give more depth for Arsenal to challenge for the title, and give Wenger some option to rotate the starting line-up.

3. Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud badly need rest. He had failed to score in recent weeks, and what worse is how clinical he is in front of goal. I don't mind if you don't score because the keeper is somehow playing very well and denying all your chances, but Giroud missed the chances because he miskicked or were unable to react quickly for the ball. Yes he deserved some credit for working hard but he looked short of sharpness in front of goal and, Bendtner or Podolski deserved to start upfront. Who knows with benching him, he can get back his sharpness? Remember Szczesny last season benched against Bayern and got a good form after that.

4. Aaron Ramsey

The only bad thing after the match is that Ramsey was brought off because of injury. Yes he hadn't been playing that well in recent games, but he is our best player in 2013 and we still need it for the next few games. 

This result brought Arsenal to the top, at least for few hours, but they might stay longer should Liverpool failed to beat Manchester City away (I hope so). That would be a perfect Christmas present for all the Gooners: Top of the Table one more time! 

Arsenal - Everton 1-1: Two points dropped

Arsenal were unable to extend the lead following the 1-1 draw against Everton. Arsenal opened the scoreline via Mesut Ozil but Everton managed to equalize via Gerard Deulofeu few minutes later. This result, however, still made Arsenal sit on the top off the table, 5 points from Liverpool and Chelsea on the second and third place.

Arsenal were not having their best performance in the first half, as Everton pressed hard and dominated the game. They got more possession, especially in the early 20 minutes. Arsenal only started to get the feet on the game after 30 minutes, and they managed to create two 1-on-1 chances, but Tim Howard was brilliant to deny Giroud and Ramsey. Kieran Gibbs could've scored had he react quicker to Santi Cazorla's cross. Everton, despite their dominance, didn't have clear cut chances in front of goal in the first half.

On the second half, Arsenal played better stuff, and slowly pressing Everton. They wasted few chances  to open the scoreline. Koscielny mistimed a volley kick via freekick from Cazorla and Giroud was unable to shoot it either on one occasion. Finally Mesut Ozil finally finds the net on 81st minute and everyone thought it's Arsenal victory.  However, after that goal, they switched off and let Everton to find their game and Arsenal were punsihed, and concede that goal. I have to say the Everton's goal was pure class, it's just flair of Gerard Deulofeu. No chance for Szczesny to save that, but I think Arsenal should not let Everton re-take the control of the game. 

I was really disappointed with this result, and consider this "2 points dropped", but fair play to Everton. They played good football and deserved points also from this match. They created more shot than Arsenal, and had more possession. They proved that the win in Old Trafford is no fluke and they have quality to mount for Champions League spot. I expect them to be better than Sp*rs this season, looking on how they play here.

Maybe Arsenal was a bit jaded? With just few days after the Hull game and with almost no change to the line up, and the fatigue might have crept in. Arsenal didn't look sharp in this match, and misplaced some passes and didn't find the decisive pass, especially in the first half. Ramsey and Wilshere seems to pick up a knock but I hope they would be okay for this month. We need some depth to tank this festive period.

On the Good Side? Rosicky proved he has that pass, and we can rely on him should we need to rest Wilshere or Ramsey. In addition, Arsenal still hold the top of the table, albeit not save for next few weeks, considering Arsenal next two match would be away game to Manchester City and home game against Arsenal. And before that, an away game to Naples. What a tough month for Arsenal. We have survived November, I hope we can survive December too.

Post Chelsea-Match Analysis

Chelsea 2 Arsenal 1, and this gave Chelsea and Spurs a very very comfortable position in the Champions League zone. Arsenal is six points behind Spurs, now. 

It was unacceptable first half, as Arsenal played very poorly and made Chelsea played like Barcelona, and dominating the game comfortably. They even have already taken the lead in the first six minutes, when Juan Mata slotted home. Things going worse as Szczesny brought Ramires down in the area, and Lampard converted the penalty to double the lead. Chelsea could've finish it in the first half with few more goals, but it stand as it was, 2-0. Arsenal were outclassed, tactically, and individually, I have to admit. Too many ball lost in own area, after some of players decided to dribble past the opposition in own area - something they shouldn't do too often.

Second half was Arsenal's game, despite two clear cut chances from Chelsea by Torres - saved by Szczesny, and Ba - cleared off the line by Vermaelen. Arsenal pushed forward, but only managed to find one goal from Walcott after picking Cazorla's sublime pass in the 58th minutes. Arsenal was getting numbers of corners and freekicks but no real threat from set pieces.

Recently, Arsenal has been playing very poorly in the first half, and the opposition delivered heavy blow in the first half, the Gunners started playing better. Away games to Reading and Bradford in League Cup, then home game against Newcastle. The same thing happened in this game. First half was a total disaster, and no one is playing well, except Wilshere and Coquelin, who ran everywhere to chase the ball. Second half was much better, but with Chelsea already had two goals advantage, they can just sit back to defence, and wait for chance for counter attack, a tactic that nearly paid, had Vermaelen not blocked Demba Ba's shot.

Giroud was not the striker we need. Arsenal, as long as I know, is not really friendly place for a towering striker. You can argue Adebayor was Giroud-esque, but Adebayor had more pace, compared to the Frenchman. Arsenal's success striker mostly are pacey striker, Wright or Henry; or technical striker, like Bergkamp, Kanu, and the Dutch betrayer. An old fashioned striker like Giroud, is not really suitable for Arsenal's style of play, or probably - and I hope - , he is still adapting ini his first year in England. Chamakh is already off-fire, while Bendtner only playing well for his first and second season before becoming overconfident and failed to shine.

Bacary Sagna is not the player we used to know, consistent, decisive, and solid. After last season's injury, Sagna seemed declined drastically. I could say he was one of the top right back in world two seasons back. But now, he looked like decent full back. His delivery was all wrong in this match. He got lot of space down the right, but his crossing was nowhere nearing his best. The second goal was also his fault, for playing to narrow, leaving Ramires so free on Chelsea's left side. Against City, Sagna was also poor, misplaced few passes from the start of the game. Time to try Jenkinson - despite his mistake against Swansea in the League on December, I guess.

Diaby was also another disappointment in this match. On the first half, he failed to cover the pitch well, and failed to make impact from the middle, before replaced by Arshavin in the second half.

On the other hand, there's some encouraging notes from this match. Jack Wilshere, once more showed he would be the one driving Arsenal forward this season. His passing was excellent, and some of his chips were dangerous. He should be played down the middle, even if it means to sacrifice Cazorla to either flank. Francis Coquelin looks like Chamberlain last season, a good team player who rarely got chance. He was a better performer in the first half, and he was never scared to move forward, or challenge the opposition player. If he could play consistently, I can imagine Arsenal's engine consisting of Wilshere and Coquelin in cetnral for the next few seasons.

For Wenger, he'd better another striker, to make it more competitive, as there's no central striker anymore in Arsenal beside misfiring Giroud, after Chamakh is loanned out. Buying Adrian Lopez would make sense, but we need someone who can change the game. I haven't seen Adrian a lot, so I'm still unsure of this man. Fernando Llorente is another target but it is another old fashioned target man, like Giroud. Cavani would be a coup, but Wenger said he doesn't want to splash on cash on Cavani. Demba Ba is already taken by Chelsea. So we can just wait and see who Wenger buy this transfer windows. I wish Wenger would make a big transfer for Arsenal - even if it means he is cuptied in Champions League - at least he could save us in the Premier League.

Another defensive midfielder would be a great additon. It is true that we have Coquelin and Arteta, plus Diaby - if you insist that he is a defensive midfielder. Diame from Wigan would be an excellent transfer, as he is already used to Premier League, and not Cuptied for the Champions League. He could sit deep, and giving Cazorla and Wilshere the freedom to move forward. He is a strong defensive midfielder we've been waiting for. Fellaini would be an expensive alternative, but recently he was playing as attacking midfielder, so buying him would not resolve Arsenal's problem.

There is still time for Wenger to buy players. 9 days is short, but anything still could happen in the short time, IF Wenger really wants to make a move in this winter trasnfer windows.

Well, Wenger is Wenger after all, and I'm not hoping too much for him. Few years he hasn't buy anyone in this period, except Arshavin, who helped Arsenal to climb to fourth place four years back. Let's just hope Wenger could find another Arshavin, or Arsenal could play like second half in Stamford Bridge, consistently. Otherwise, we might not seen Arsenal in Champions League - or even Europa League - next season.

Crazy Game!!

Arsenal closed 2012 by beating Newcastle 7-3 in a very entertaining, thrilling match in Emirates Stadium. Leading three times through Walcott, Chamberlain, and Podolski; Arsenal let Newcastle equalized three times via Arsenal-linked Demba Ba - twice, and Sylvain Marveaux. However, Newcastle had no way back after Theo Walcott made it 4-3, with a cool finishing receiving Kieran Gibbs cross, which was initially meant for Lukas Podolski. Olivier Giroud made a diving header to score the fifth for Arsenal - from Walcott's cross, and added the sixth, with a great footwork followed by powerful finishing to the bottom corner. Theo Walcott finished his perfect night today, by making wonderful goal, completing his hattrick, dribbling through four players - and also falling down - before chipping the ball pass Tim Krul. Olivier Giroud almost followed Theo's heroism, but his shot receiving Ramsey's cross denied by the crossbar.

Theo Walcott once again started upfront, and despite scoring a goal in the first half, he was anonymous in the first 45, before going crazy on the second half. He showed real confidence after scoring his second goal of tonight, but he was also guilty wasting some good opportunities, with misplaced pass to Cazorla on the counter attack, giving Newcastle's defender time to recover; or his decision to shot when it was 3 against 2, with Podolski and Cazorla unmarked. However, generally, it was a stunning performance by the Englishman, who is yet to put his sign on the contract. 

On the other hand, Olivier Giroud showed Walcott that he is not the only one deserved to play in the central forward position. He scored two goals in just twenty minutes, showing his predatory instinct. Yes, Newcastle was exhausted and desperate already when he is coming on, but scoring two goals in twenty minutes in Premier League deserved a credit. His first goal showed why Arsenal bought him - to maximize crossing from both flanks, while his second goal showed his striker instinct. 

It is good to have healthy competition in the team, rising the level of both players. In addition of competing for one place upfront, today we see that Walcott and Giroud is also compatible to each other. If Giroud plays, he brings different dimensions, while Walcott can start on the right flanks, and it is also good tactical alternative for Arsenal, not only depending on Walcott's pace, but also Giroud's aerial ability. It would be interesting to see Arsenal's line up next match, whether Wenger stick to Walcott upfront, or trying to play Giroud and Walcott together.

However, despite good attacking display, Arsenal still need to improve defensively. Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen struggled against physical Demba Ba, and Pappis Cisse. Kieran Gibbs was dangerous marauding to opposition's box, but was clueless defending in own area, as shown on the second and third Newcastle's goal. Gibbs was nowhere to mark Sylvain Marveaux, and was nowhere to stop Demba Ba on the third. Bacary Sagna was surprisingly shaky in defence. It is true that Arsene's Arsenal never known as good defensive unit, except for 2006, but often, good defence would be the difference in the big match. Arsenal looked really shaky without Per Mertesacker, who missed the game because of unwell. 

It was a great game to end 2012 for the Gooner, but remember - without disrespecting Newcastle - it was just a match against Newcastle, who was missing a lot of first team players, plus played Man. United few days back, while Arsenal having a rest after the match against West Ham was postponed. Arsenal struggled to stamp the authority, before the last 20 minutes, Newcastle run out of gas, and Arsenal strolled to scored more goal. It won't be so easy next time, but if Arsenal showed attacking fluidity like in the last 20 mintues, plus strengthening the defense, next match against Southampton should be another win.

Reading 2 Arsenal 5, and that how Arsenal should play

Arsenal bounced back from the midweek penalty defeat in League Cup against Bradford by beating Reading away from home, 5-2, as Santi Cazorla being the main protagonist last night with his hattrick, plus one assist. Lukas Podolski finally scored a goal once again in Premier League after last scoring against Tottenham Hotspurs, while Theo Walcott, who finally played centrally as he desires, also registered his name on the scoresheet.

Arsenal dominated the game from the start, and creating couples of chances, with Chamberlain's long shot was denied by Adam Federici. However, it was Reading who got first clear cut chances as Pavel Pogrebnyak cut inside from the right wing, and centered the ball which was awfully missed by Jobi McAnuff

Arsenal finally broke the deadlock after Kieran Gibbs penetrated from the left side and sent a beautfiul cross to Podolski, who made brilliant first touch and made no mistake to bury it to goal. Theo Walcott could've added the second few minutes after the first goal, as he beaten offside trap, but Adam Federici made an important saves to keep the scoreline. Santi Cazorla doubled the lead after receiving a delightful cross from Lukas Podolski from the left wing, and Santi did a diving header to put the ball into the bottom corner. Santi Cazorla quickly doubled his tally by scoring the third goal of the game, Theo Walcott lobbed the ball to far post, as Gibbs headed back to Cazorla, and the Spaniard controlled the ball beautifully before slammed the ball to the goal, leaving Federici no chance to deny it. First half ended, 3-0 for Arsenal.

Second half, Reading tried to pull one back, but Theo Walcott nearly added the fifth, but Mariappa made off-the-line block to deny him. Santi Cazorla made it 0-4 with a simple finish after a beautiful team goal. Chamberlain ran to the middle and passed to Wilshere outside the box, as he sent a through ball to the box to Lukas Podolski, whose low cross easily converted to goal by Santi Cazorla. Reading grab one back, after Kieran Gibbs awful pass picked by Reading player, and Wilshere slipped when he tried to chase the ball, and Adam Le Fondre rounded Szczesny to make it 1-4. Few moments later, Jimmy Kebe escaped from offside trap before beating Szczesny, 2-4. It was kind of deja vu, as Reading tried to replicate what Arsenal did to them, coming from 0-4 down to win the game, and Arsenal's defence was in the nerve for few moments, before Theo Walcott clinched it for the Gunners with the seventh goal of the game, after Santi Cazorla dribbled passed few player and sent a beautiful pass to Walcott, and he placed the ball to the left corner with his left foot, 2-5.

This was the game Arsenal should've played in the recent weeks, a very fluid attacking display, the ball was flowing easily from the back to the front, with Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere bossed the midfield, while Mikel Arteta keeps the beat from the back. All of five goals from Arsenal are scored from open play, and also a good team play. Player exchanged position few times, Walcott moved to flanks few times with Podolski sneaked to the central position, or Cazorla and Wilshere moved to channels to support the flanks Chamberlain few times cut inside to create more spaces.

The players made some incisive run into the box, and look for a good spot for receiving the pass, and that's what missing from Arsenal in recent weeks. They created chances, but few willing to run into the box. In the game against Bradford, Arsenal wasn't that bad in midfield, but in the final third, they were quite toothless upfront. There wasn't any time when one player tried to beat one man - I hate to blame one player, but yes, it was Gervinho who was wasteful that time -, the ball was instead passed to team mates to open more spaces. It was the Arsenal game we used to see few years back, a beautiful passing game!

Both wings were very lively throughout 90 minutes, especially the left flank where two goals started there. Kieran Gibbs enjoyed attacking licence he got in this match, and few times he penetrated to the box, as he did to set up Cazorla's second goal. Gibbs started to enjoy the teamwork with Lukas Podolski on the flank, and linked up well with the German few times. Bacary Sagna was not as adventurous as Gibbs in attacking but his crosses were always accurate. Chamberlain could've done better with his crossing, but he is always getting into dangerous position, and wasn't scared to beat some man, without excessive effort of doing a one-man show.

The only bad thing from this match is the poor defending after the fourth goal. Under no pressure, Gibbs gave the ball cheaply and cost a goal, before another lapse in defending gave Reading the second goal, and giving another pressure to the defence, before Walcott scored the fifth. However, Arsenal had not known for the strong defence, except for the 2005-2006 season in Champions League when they won with clean sheets. In 2000s, they always scored a lot of goals, despite allowing some goals conceded. I would say this season Arsenal's defence wasn't that bad, but most of Arsenal's defeat was caused by not-so-clinical finishing, and inability to create chances. I don't think it is a problem, if you conceded three but you can score five.

The question for Wenger is whether he will trust Walcott in the central position, leaving Giroud on the bench. Walcott was more mobile and pacy than Giroud, and probably that style of play suits Arsenal more. Giroud could be an alternative for Arsenal, should the opposition able to stop Arsenal pass-and-move game. Wenger should try Walcott in central position again in next match against Wigan, and see whether this plan is working. Gervinho has been put in the central but so far he has failed to impress.

The last question for Wenger is the consistency. Arsenal need to find the consistency, if they want to challenge for the throphy, or at least the fourth place. If Arsenal continued play like this, I do believe third, or even second place is a realistic target for this season.

Finally, a victory in EPL!

After three winless matches in EPL, finally Arsenal scrapped a win in front of their home fans, by beating West Bromwich Albion 2-0 from two goals from the spot by Mikel Arteta.

Cazorla dived in the penalty area to win a penalty, and the referee gave it. Mikel Arteta, who earlier this season missed a penalty in a disappointing 3-3 home draw against Fulham, made no mistake to put the ball into the net with a panenka-style. Another penalty was given after Chamberlain was brought down in the penalty area, this time it's a clear penalty, albeit slightly controversial as Chamberlain fouled a West Brom player earlier on. For the second time, Arteta successfully converted the penalty to doubled the lead.

It wasn't the best performance from the Gunners - I would say helped by West Brom poor game today - , nevertheless it was an important three points, bringing Arsenal to sixth place, two points behind West Brom, and it was the much needed win after three poor game in EPL, plus one defeat in Champions League. Arsenal created a handful chances, particularly in the second half, after the introduction of Tomas Rosicky, who played his first EPL game this season. That what Arsenal should've made in the last four games, chances! You can't score goals if you can't create chances! That's why Arsenal couldn't win in those games, they failed to create chances well.

Gervinho was improving in this game, getting into dangerous position, and making some good runs, despite still wasteful with the ball. Chamberlain also showed a better performance than his anonymous display in the defeat against Greek side Olympiakos in the Premier League four days earlier. Vermaelen is getting better and better in the heart of defence, dealing well with the big target-man Romelu Lukaku, while Tomas Rosicky was lively after entering the fray, replacing Gervinho. Arsenal's attack getting more and more dangerous after Rosicky played.

However, Cazorla started to lose his flair in the midfield, and his bright form in the early season faded. Jaded? Probably. Wenger probably could try combination of Rosicky-Arteta-Wilshere, and give Cazorla one or two break. Olivier Giroud was off-day in this game, despite hard working upfront, but failed to give any threats for West Brom's keeper, Boaz Myhill.

Arsenal needed to be more clinical in front of goal, they wasted so many chances today. They might been able to create so many chances against lesser opponent, but against stronger opponent, they couldn't  afford to miss so many chances, if they want to challenge for the throphy! Podolski missed from less than five meters after receiving a nice pass from Jack Wilshere. Gervinho miskicked the ball on the first half, while Wilshere's fake allowed West Brom defender's to buy some time to block his shot. Instead of first time shoot, Arsenal players often dribbled or touched the ball, givinig some time for defender to recover.

Another problem is the crossing accuracy, which is still lacking. I only saw two good crosses, from the deep, by our right defender, Bacary Sagna, met Olivier Giroud's head, and Gibbs gave a good ball to Gervinho which he couldn't maximiize it.

However, the worst part from this game is not that, but Cazorla's dive. Cazorla is undoubtedly a great player, and it's a shame to see a player with that quality dived. Yes, we need a win, but it's never good to win a game through dive. It's just not the game Arsenal fans want to see! We would prefer to see a clean win, instead of winning through penalty from diving!

Well, anyway, Arsenal must take benefit of some easier games than the November, as they will face Reading and Wigan away. If Arsenal could create chances like today and be more clinical, they would surely come back to top four, or probably challenge again for the title? Who knows if City, United, Spurs and Chelsea slipped again while Arsenal winning all the games?

UCL spots competition is getting more and more interesting, and unpredictable

Tottenham and Newcastle closed the gap between third placed Arsenal, after winning the last match, 4-1 against Bolton and 2-0 against Chelsea respectively, both away games.

Few predicted Newcastle would came back from Stamford Bridge with a victory. First, Chelsea had been superb recently, beating Barcelona in the Champions League and trashing Tottenham on the FA Cup. Newcastle just lost 0-4 on Wigan's home last week, while Chelsea enjoyed 6-1 home victory against QPR, where Fernando Torres scored his first hattrick. Well, football is not mathematics, so as we know, Newcastle beat the host by two magnificent - and rather unbelievable - Pappis Cisse's brace.
 
With this result, Tottenham stands in fourth place, and Newcastle in the 5th place, just with goal difference between them. Both of them are just one point away from Arsenal, who sits on the third place. Chelsea are four points away from the fourth place, but would be able to qualify to the Champions League, should they beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, leaving the fourth placed team in Premier League advanced to Europa League instead of Champions League. Arsenal is still on the driving seat with one point advantage, but should they complacent and dropped more points, they will ended outside big four and means no Champions League football next season.

Looking for the remaining fixtures, Arsenal and Tottenham get the opponent that mathematically they are able to beat. Arsenal welcomes Norwich this weekend, before traveling to the Hawhtorns, West Bromwich to face WBA, while Tottenham have Aston Villa and Fulham for their final two opponents. Newcastle have the toughest fixtures, welcoming league leader Manchester City in their stadium and an away games to in-form Everton in the final day, who comfortably sits in 7th place. Chelsea would have one tough game against two-faced Liverpool on Anfield, and closed the season with the home game against relegation threatened team, Blackburn.


However, Premier League has been really unpredictable, adding some exciting reason to follow it. Some of unpredictable wins and defeats occured. Wigan knocked Arsenal in Emirates 2-1 and trashing Newcastle 4-0, after losing controversially against Chelsea and overplayed Man. United. Fulham beating Wigan on Craven Cottage, and Liverpool on Anfield, Norwich beating Tottenham in Hart Lane,  and on-fire Chelsea just lost against Newcastle. No one would be sure how the Premier League would ended, anything still could happen.

The race for the Champions League spots is likely to be tight and tense, until the very last moment of it, unlike the previous season, where the teams qualifying to Champions League already settled in this phase of competition. No teams could afford to drop more points if they want to play in the highest competition in Europe. Even if Arsenal winning plus Tottenham and Newcastle drop the point in gameweek 37, the later two names would still have to battle for the fourth place. Even if one of them already got the fourth place, they still could lose the place, should Chelsea win the Champions League. Any fourth placed team in EPL - except if Chelsea somehow manage to climb to 4th place, surely will pray so Chelsea won't win the Champions League.

Not a bad result nor good, but this shows Arsenal's weakness

Arsenal is hold 1-1 in Brittania Stadium in a match against Stoke City. The host took lead after Peter Crouch headed home. Arsenal replied few minutes after that, with Robin van Persie equalized, tapping Tomas Rosicky's crossing. It was not the best result Arsenal could get, as they dropped two points. However, Brittania Stadium is never easy for Wenger's boy to win, just winning once since Stoke City promoted to the Premier League. Arsenal always struggled to cope with physical game of Stoke City.

How was the game?

However, today, it was Arsenal who had most possession. Arsenal started brightly, with Benayoun nearly opened the score, but his shot just too weak. However, it was the home side who opened the score by Peter Crouch. Nice crossing from the left wing found Peter Crouch, and he did perfect job to net the ball, leaving Wojciech Szczesny rooted on the spot. Robin van Persie scored his 28th goal of the Premier League this season, after a nice determination shown by Yossi Benayoun on the left wing, winning back the ball, and passed it to Tomas Rosicky. "The Little Mozard" sent a wonderful floating ball to the captain, and van Persie made no mistake to make it 1-1. Arsenal had some chances in front of goal, particularly Gervinho's missed header, and two wonderful header from the van Persie. But Asmir Begovic produced superb save to deny Robin van Persie. Gervinho had two chances, but none of them finding the net. Koscielny headed once from Robin van Persie but it was also over the bar.

On the second half, Arsenal dominate most of the game, but failed to create clear chances in the final third. Vermaelen and Ramsey shot wide from the target, while van Persie and Vermaelen also blocked by Stoke's resilient defence. Arsenal had some shouts of penalty but all of them ignored by the referee. One from Shawcross' brave challenge on Benayoun, one from Benayoun again distracted from behind, and handball by Stoke player on Vermalen's fierce shot. However, it was Stoke even went close on scoring goal. Cameron Jerome tried his luck from the narrow angle to test Szczesny, but the keeper made a great reflect. Sagna need to clear the ball on Rory Delap's dangerous throw in, before Jonathan Walter missed 1-on-1 chance. In the end, Stoke 1 Arsenal 1

Good Sides
The good point from this game is the return of the passing game. Arsenal, arguably, played the ball quite well despite making some bad touches. They were dominant in the midfield. Robin van Persie scored a goal from open play, that's also a good point from this game. He had been "quite unproductive" compared to his performance this season. Yossi Benayoun showed a great determination and aggresivity, and he might be permanently sold to Arsenal next summer. Rosicky remained a good dirigent in Arsenal's midfield, and Ramsey, who was injured on the same ground, showed some neat passes, and ambition to shot from the outside, despite not meeting the target. He wasn't afraid to make some challenge to Stoke's player.

Bad sides
On the other hand, Arsenal showed his old illness, lack of creativity against defensive teams. Stoke was great in defending, they pulled some last ditch block, as well as well as nice saves from Asmir Begovic. However, Arsenal didn't create many chances in the second half, compared to the first half. They were missing Arteta who has fierce long shot, or even Wilshere's ability to play the ball. Gervinho was ineffective in front of goal, despite making use of his pace well. Wenger's decision not to play Chamberlain raised eyebrows. Arsenal were lacking of creativity, but Wenger played centre-forward Marouane Chamakh, who was in goal drought since September. Chamakh didn't play too badly in this game. Of course, he lacked of time to show his skill by just entering the fray 10 minutes from the normal time. But, he did make some neat touches. He didn't even get any service to threaten the goal. Another bad point from this game is some mistake shown on the backline. Kieran Gibbs was still really vulnerable, and few times he was attacked and attacked again.

Actually, it would be a bad result, if we saw that Wenger dropped two points. However, with Newcastle losing 4-0 on Wigan, it was a fairly good result for the Gunners. 4 points above Newcastle with one less game to play than Newcastle, 7 and 8 above Tottenham and Chelsea with two games less. Arsenal still in a good driving seat to secure direct qualification to the Champions League. Next match, against Norwich City in Emirates Stadium, they cannot afford to make any mistake, or it would be Tottenham or Chelsea who take Arsenal's place now.

Gunners overclassed Man City

Arsenal bounced back from 2-1 defeat at QPR last week to grab a deserved win 1-0 against Man. City in Emirates Stadium and virtually ended City's title hope. A stunning goal from Arteta's trademark thunderous shot was enough for Arsenal to earn three points and leapfrog local rival Tottenham Hotspurs, who drew against Sunderland 0-0 yesterday. Arsenal now holds two points advantage over Spurs, and five over Chelsea. While Man City is now 8 points behind leader Man. United with just 6 match to go, and their title chances is evaporating now.

It was a perfect result for Arsenal, where they keep the advantage over Spurs and Chelsea in the race of third spot. It was also a proof of good mentality of Wenger's boys, where they reacted brilliantly to last week defeat. A poor display in Lotfus Road seemed had no effect to this match, where they comfortably controlled the game on almost all the match. Arsenal dominated the middle of the park, and with handful of chances they could've scored more.

Arsenal should've opened their goal account when van Persie's effort accidentally blocked by Thomas Vermaelen on first half. Lady of Luck seemed to smile at City when Robin van Persie's clever header on second half also just hit the post, and Theo Walcott's low shot just hit the other post of Joe Hart, and Vermaelen cannot get enough to rebound the ball. However, even luck cannot help City out of conceding, when Arteta struck the ball to the bottom corner of City's goal.

Rosicky, Arteta, and Song bossed the midfield, flowing the ball from the rear to the front. Rosicky were as lively as always, and Song's trademark flick were almost becoming assist, had the assistant referee not raise the offside flag on Robin van Persie. Robin van Persie wasn't really lively, but he was dangerous whenever he got chances, and should've awarded by goal in this match. Bakary Sagna was really solid against Balotelli, linked up well with Theo Walcott, and showed what Arsenal had been missed when he was injured. Koscielny and Vermaelen were strong wall in Arsenal's heart of defence, and they were not really troubled by Aguero. The only defect was just Ramsey's unperfect finish in the end of the match, after Arsenal made brilliant breakthrough via counterattack.

In the other hand, City weren't too good in creative department, with Szczesny just forced to make two important actions : one smart rushing out from City's wonderful through pas and one tip over the bar, but aside that two chances, were largely untroubled, and seems his kicking has been improving. They were nowhere to win this match. Balotelli was not the Balotelli we saw when City thrashed Man. United 6-1, and Tevez was unable to provide matchwinner like against Chelsea. Milner and Barry struggled to hold the force of trio Rosicky - Arteta - Song.

Arsenal overpowered cash-powered Man. City, and this would be a good momentum to bring for the next match for the Gunners against the bottom of the EPL, Wolverhampton Wanderers. Should they not be overconfidence and play like today, they would surely win and cemented their place in the third place.

Arsenal post match analysis

Arsenal 2 Newcastle 1. The Gunners once again coming from behind to score fifth consecutive win in EPL. Hatem Ben Afra scored the first goal in the game on the first half, after Vermaelen cheaply gave the ball on the defense. Captain Van-tastic RvP replied instantly, just one minute after the goal, receiving a fine cross from Walcott. When the clock was ticking down, and draw was the most likely result, Thomas Vermaelen scored the winner in the injury time. This results brings Arsenal just one point behind the rival Tottenham Hotspurs.

The win against Newcastle is the fourth consecutive coming-from-behind, first time in English Premier League history. It is also another injury time winner - like against Liverpool, but this time it's not Robin van Persie who scored the winning goal, but Thomas Vermaelen, the Belgian central defender, who snatched the winner. Great resilience shown by the Gunners, they could overturn deficit to a win. This is just the reverse of what Arsenal had been shown in the recent season, where they were in the position to win the game, but they somehow threw it away. Most notably is the 4-4 draw against the same opposition last season, where they were 4-0 up, but lost their four goals advantage.

Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott showed good understanding on the equalizer, and Robin van Persie showed a world class technique controlling the ball, made no mistake to reply instantly to Newcastle's goal. He could've scored one more goal had his right foot shot not wide from the target. RvP also showed the 'naugthy' character tonight, not fearing to argue with Tim Krul - despite it was a little bit foolish until he was brandished yellow card. That's what Arsenal need, a captain who is naughty, and fear no one.

Theo Walcott was always a threat down the right flank, and even after Newcastle subbed Davide Santon with James Perch just to stop Walcott, he is still unstoppable in this match. Most of Arsenal attacks come from his side, and he could've got another assist, had Rosicky find the net on the second half. He was the one who created the winning goal with a great cross.

Trio Arteta-Song-Rosicky once again dominated the middle of the park, and Rosicky showed why he deserved to get a contract extension. He ran the show in the central of the field, flowing the ball well. He could've easily scored another goal in three consecutive match, had he been more composed in front of goal.

Thomas Vermaelen showed great character today. He might have been the one who gave away the ball, leading to Ben Afra's goal. He might have been uncomfortable dealing with Shola Amoebi and Demba Ba. He might have been got knock on the match. But he was the one who scored the winning goal, to pay what he had done. It was like in the match against Fulham, where he made an own-goal, but scored the equalizer himself. He showed a great work rate, running from the central of the defence, to the front of goal, before beat Tim Krul to secure three points tonight.

This team has a great potential and character, and could compete for the title next season, should Wenger keep the key player, and buy some decent back-ups.

Dramatic, Massive Victory

Arsenal got a boost in fourth place race with an important 2-1 victory against on-form Sunderland in the Stadium of Light. Coming from behind 0-1, the winner come at the injruy time, with Thierry Henry tapped Arshavin's cross. All Arsenal's heroes were all from the bench. Aaron Ramsey, who replaced injured Per Mertesacker, need less than five minutes to score the equalizer. Andrey Arshavin - coming to replace Walcott - created the winning goal, while Thierry Henry, Chamberlain's subsitute, was the one who scored the winning goal, on the injury time. Credit must be given to Wenger, that this time his substitution changed the momentum of the game.

Has to be admitted that this is not Arsenal's best performance. Not too creative in creating opportunity. Relatively quiet game for captain Robin van Persie, who only got few chances in this match. Rosicky and Arteta failed to spark the midfield - despite being tidy on possession - and Song misplaced some passes in this match. Chamberlain wasn't too lively on the left wing, and Theo Walcott was quite ineffective on the other flank. Mertesacker was lucky not to conceded a penalty in the first half, but unlucky to be injured while chasing the ball, which leading to Sunderland's goal.

However, Arsenal's spirit must be praised, they came from 0-1 down, against the team who has better recent form from them, and this is an away game, where Arsenal's form has been very poor. Last twenty minutes Arsenal played well, and could score goals earlier on if they play like this from the beginning of the match. Andrey Arshavin, who has been recently criticized for lack of confidence, and Aaron Ramsey, who benched in the last two match, proved their worth. Thierry Henry, who played his last EPL match, scored the winner in the injury time. Like the commentator said "It's like written on the script", Thierry Henry still showed his class in Arsenal shirt, and once again, he scored for the Gunners in his short-term spell loan. This is his third goal, after the winner against Leeds in FA, and the seventh goal against Blackburn.

This massive victory brings Arsenal to the fourth place, because in the same time both Chelsea and Liverpool losing from Everton and Man United respectively. Of course Arsenal still need to be consistent in order to secure fourth place this season. This victory would also boost Arsene Wenger's team morale against AC Milan in the first leg of Champions League, just few days from this match. If they showed great character like they showed today, the victory in San Siro is not impossible

Seventh Heaven

Finally Arsenal scored the first victory in league in 2012. After two shock defeat against Fulham and Swansea, one home defeat against arc rival Manchester United, plus one scoreless draw in Reebok Stadium, Arsenal thrashed Blackburn 7-1 in this afternoon in Emirates Stadium. Robin van Persie was marvellous with his hattrick and two assist.

Arsenal started the game well, when Robin van Persie tapped in Walcott's cross on second minutes. Despite a lot of chances, it was Blackburn who scored the second goal of this game. Morten Gamst Pedersen fired a freekick to make it 1-1. However, Arsenal need less than 10 minutes to add two goals. Robin van Persie did another tap in, and made a superb assist to Alex Oxlade Chamberlain who dribbled the ball through Paul Robinson and made it 3-1. Gael Givet was sent off after attempting a two foot tackle on Robin van Persie.

On the second half, Arsenal were as dangerous as on the first half. Mikel Arteta scored again against Blackburn, with a powerful deflected shot, after a corner for Arsenal. Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain made it five, after Walcott brilliantly dragged four Blackburn players and sent a delightful assist to Chamberlain. Robin van Persie smashed Francis Coquelin's cross to achieve his second hattrick of the season after his first one in 5-3 victory in Stamford bridge. Thierry Henry finally closed the show in Emirates with his first goal in Premier League after returning to Arsenal on this winter. Robin van Persie once more gave the assist.

This was one of the best Arsenal game this season, despite defensively they weren't tested. Arsenal created a lot of chances in this game. Chambo and Walcott were brilliant. Walcott used his pace well, and setted up two Robin van Persie's goal and one for Chamberlain. Chamberlain was a wing wizard, his dribble cuts Blackburn's defence like a hot knife through butter. Francis Coquelin was really mobile on the right back position and his delivery wasn't bad. He made one assist for Robin van Persie.

Thomas Rosicky, Alex Song, and Mikel Arteta bossed the midfield, not giving any chance for Blackburn to play their game. Tomas Rosicky were very comfortable in the advanced playmaker position, leading the orchestra on the midfield. Mikel Arteta flowed the ball from the backline to the upfront. Alex Song protected the backline well, and made a couple of great through passes. Sorry for Aaron Ramsey, seems the starting line up will be owned by this trio. Ramsey has potential for sure, but he is yet to reach the potential. Maybe next two season, but clearly it's not now.

Robin van Persie continues his lethal goalscoring form, adding three to lead the top scorer chart. The first two goals was easy but the third goal was a superb goal with a world class technique. He also showed unselfishness, giving Thierry Henry the assist on the last minute of the game. If he continues this form, it is likely he would get his Premier League top scorer in one season, and maybe drive Arsenal winning the FA Cup, or even Champions League, who knows?

In overall, it's almost a perfect game for Arsenal, just a goal conceded makes it not perfect. It might be just worth three points for the Gunners, but it was a morale boost for Arsenal to fight for the fourth place in order to qualify to Champions League next season.

This side is not ready to win EPL

The first match in 2012 ended with a defeat. After leading 1-0 on first half, they gave away the lead and surrender 2-1 to Fulham. There was some optimism Arsenal would able to back to the title race, with 9 points behind Man City and still 17 games to go. However with this performance, I think it would be impossible for Arsenal to win the Premier League. The performance against Fulham in the second half is one of the worst Arsenal display this season, aside from the bad defeat at Old Trafford in the beginning of the season.

The first half was solid, if wasn't spectacular. However, they are lacking of product on the final third. They might have been 3-0 up on the first half. But they only managed to score once, by Laurent Koscielny. It also wasn't really a build-up. Ramsey's deflected cross taken by Koscielny's header, and it was 1-0 for Arsenal's lead. Song, Gervinho, Ramsey, and van Persie had chances to score, but failed to put the ball into the net.

I've been noticing there's always same mistakes in every match : Inefficiency and Complacency.

First one : Inefficiency. Arsenal had many chances in the first half, but only one leading to goal. Theo Walcott, who asked for a wage raise, was very wasteful upfront. He didn't make any successful cross today, and his decision making back to Walcott 2010, unlike Walcott in October-November we had expected. Gervinho also hadn't been sharp enough. It wasn't a new issue. Technically gifted, but not composed enough in front of goal. That what Gervinho had been showing this season. Robin van Persie didn't have the best game of his career - and again if he doesn't score, Arsenal can't win, somehow. Aaron Ramsey too often misplaced through ball, and Mikel Arteta wasn't brave enough to make killer balls.

Second : Complaceny. Almost in every non-winning game for Arsenal starts from this problem. After leading 1-0, the mentality of the player always think they will easily score the second goal. Against Sunderland, Stoke, Wolverhampton, and Fulham, they conceded after leading one nil. Fortunately against Sunderland and Stoke, Robin van Persie came and saved the day again. Against Wolverhampton, they were only able to secure a 1-1 draw. But this time, Arsenal lost 1-2 against Fulham. They deserved the victory, as they played much better than the Gunners in second half.

The encouraging thing from this match is the performance of Francis Coquelin. The Frenchman, who originally plays in Alex Song's position, was strong on the left back, and made couples of good run as well as sturdy defending. His mobility has been his asset too. Despite the last goal come from his side, he couldn't be blamed. It was Squillaci's mistake which led to the goal. This player would have bright future if he can continue playing like this.

Well, this season, Wenger should focused on how aiming for the fourth place, or meaning Champions League next season. With the squad has been hit by injury crisis, it would be wise to dip into the transfer windows, which just opened two days ago. If Wenger bought one or two world class player, Arsenal might back to aim title, but not for now, they were miles apart from the title.

Not a bad way to end 2011 with a victory

Arsenal did just enough to earn 3 points on the last game of the 2011. Robin van Persie once again scored the winning goal for the Gunners. This victory brings Arsenal to fourth place, pushing Liverpool, who won against Newcastle 3-1 a day before, to the fifth place.

As usual, Arsenal wasn't too dominant in the first 15 minutes, but started to dominate the game after that. Robin van Persie comes twice close to break the deadlock, when his header just wide from the target and his shot just few metres in front of the goal somehow went over the bar. Theo Walcott also had a great chance, but he opted to cross it and failed to score. QPR, in other hand, only had two chances, which Szczesny brilliantly blocked it, and the other one, Per Mertesacker made a perfect block to stop the shot. The first half ended, and it was still scoreless.

On the second half, Arsenal continued its dominance, and got numbers of corners, but failed to score. Arsenal should have got two penalties, when Laurent Koscielny's shot blocked by hand, but the ref somehow didn't give any penalty; and when Mikel Arteta's cross touched QPR's defender's hand, but the ref continued the game. Theo Walcott unbelievably missed a one on one chance on the beginning of the first half. Aaron Ramsey saw his fierce shot cleared of the line by Joey Barton. Finally, Robin van Persie broke the deadlock after QPR's misplaced pass is received by Arshavin, and he sent through ball to the captain. Robin van Persie coolly put it back into the net. 1-0 the scoreline. The goal he scored made him just one goal behind Alan Shearer's record goals in one year. With that goal, RvP had scored 35 in 2011, and Shearer scored 36 in 1995.

After Arsenal took the lead, QPR tried to hit back, by creating few chances but failed to score. Matthew Connolly was unmarked on the penalty area but he smashed the ball over, Adel Taarabt forced Wojciech Szczesny dived to save the ball, but failed to score any. On the other hand, Arsenal could have easily doubled their lead when Robin van Persie's superb pass met Gervinho who stands just two meters in front of goal, but he missed it. Aaron Ramsey had a great opportunity, but he missed the target. In the end, the scoreline remained the same, 1-0.

It wasn't the most clinical finishing Arsenal showed yesterday, and Robin van Persie failed to broke Alan Shearer's record. Credit must be given to QPR who did good defending, and made some crucial blocks. Arsenal need to be more clinical in front of goal, in order to secure fourth place this season, as well as any silverware possible. Walcott and Gervinho can't afford to missed like that again. But at least, the Gooner should be grateful to earn full points where Man United and Chelsea drops three points home, Spurs drops two on Swansea's home. It was a good New Year present from the Gunners for all Arsenal fan.

Arsenal - Fulham post analysis

Arsenal's streak victory stopped by a very organized Fulham in the Emirates Stadium. An uninspiring first half, and still uninspiring in the second half, before the introduction of Ivorian winger Gervinho and French midfielder Abou Diaby. Vermaelen scored an own goal to make Fulham lead 1-0, but then he scored another goal to level the score.

Wenger changed two players from the side beating Borussia Dortmund with Johan Djourou taking Laurent Koscielny's place on the right back and Andrey Arshavin was selected ahead of Gervinho on the left flank. Wenger probably would like to rest his player, just before facing Manchester City on the League Cup.

Arsenal were really uninspiring in the first half, they were only creating few chances, and Fulham even pressed Arsenal's defence line in the first fifteen minutes. Arsenal slowly got control of the match, but were unable to break the deadlock, as Fulham defended like a rock, very strong and rigid. Theo Walcott was the most dangerous Arsenal player on the pitch, but still failed to make any end product.

Arshavin, who recently said he was 'glued' on the bench by Wenger, failed to prove himself, and it justified why he was glued on the bench. Ineffective, and lacking of confidence, that's two main points of his weaknesses. He was unsurprisingly substituted by Marouane Chamakh on the second half. His time in Arsenal might has come to end, and he might leave in January, and Wenger might buy another winger, or even try Miyaichi on Arshavin's position. Proven, that after Gervinho entered the fray, Arsenal's game was improving, they were more dangerous, and Gervinho several times entered Fulham's penalty area, which Arshavin unable to do in 70 minutes. Had Gervniho played from the beginning, Arsenal might have won the game.

This result shows that Arsenal still lacking of the depth in the squad. Arsenal's excellent recent form has been depending on the first team players Wenger has always put from the beginning, notably van Persie, Gervinho, Walcott, Song and Vermaelen. The second string players had never really impressed in the Champions League or Premier League. Arsenal were lack of inspiration against Stoke City, before Robin van Persie saved the Gunners with his two goals. Arsenal weren't sharp enough in the home game against Marseille, once again when Robin van Persie was on the bench.

Wenger should add one or two players to the squad, especially flair players who could make a difference when other players is stuck. Other players like van Persie who could inspire the whole team is something Arsenal need. In my opinion, there are only two players like that in Arsenal's squad now, Walcott and Gervinho. Walcott still lack of consistency, while Gervinho is not composed enough in front of the goal. With transfer windows is nearing, Wenger should have prepared some names he would bid in January. It would be great if he could bring big names, such as Hazard and Gotze, but it is not likely.

Besides the negative side, has to be said that Wenger (finally) made a correct decision in substitution by bringing in Gervinho to replace Ramsey, a decision that he should've done earlier. Vermaelen, the own goal scorer, converted Walcott's cross to make it 1-1. Vermaelen showed great character, even after scoring an own goal, he didn't turned bad, and finally he made up for what he have done.
