Arsenal succumbed to a 0-2 defeat in a friendly against Manchester City in Beijing. Both team didn't fielded the strongest team, although some of the first team players were involved in this match. Despite an even game on the first half, the Citizen were able to score two goals. On the second half, much more inspired Arsenal failed to break City's defence, despite having some chances to score goals.
BADs
1. It was the same old Arsenal.
Nothing is really changed this season. It was still the same Arsenal. getting the ball, playing beautifully, making passes, but failing to score. The defense has no improvement from last season. High defense line without the proper protection from the midfield would make the defense highly vulnerable and opponent would easily penetrated it. Steve Bould, one of the famous back four on Arsenal's 90s were promoted
to the assistant manager's spot, and many gooners hope there would be an
improvement, defensive wise, but it is yet to be shown in this match.
Last season, Arsenal conceded 49 goals in the league, highest conceded during Wenger's era, meaning there's something wrong with the defence. If Arsenal wants to challenge for something next season, they should seriously fix the defensive frailness, or the trophy drought would continue, again; or even kicked out of the big four for the first time in Wenger's era.
2. Arsenal lacking of game-changing player
Aside Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain who played very well, there was no one who could create something from nothing. Alex Song was on his off day, none of his pass threaten the City's defence. Gervinho showed some flair, but he still lacks of final touch. Theo Walcott was still the same him in the last three or four years, inconsistent, and failed to capitalize his advantage using his pace. Mikel Arteta was a dependable player, yet he is not someone who can really change the game. He is more like a stabilizer in the midfield.
Last season, Robin van Persie did a brilliant job, but this season, it's still unclear whether he would stay in Arsenal after the transfer window closed. He already said that he won't renew his contract, meaning Arsenal has to sell him, or losing him next season.
Arsenal already brought in Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. Looking from his performance in Euro 2012, Podolski is not the type who could bring the team up when all the players were playing badly, but he could be great if the team is great. Olivier Giroud did well in Montpellier, but both he and Podolski is still unproven in the highest level in club. Podolski failed to deliver in Bayern Muenchen few years ago.
Arsenal would still need to buy someone Santi Cazorla is linked with the Gunners, and he would be a nice addition, could replace Rosicky in the attacking midfielder. He played well with Malaga last season, and could complement Giroud's aerial ability, Walcott's pace, and Gervinho's trickery.
3. Marouane Chamakh still low of confidence
Marouane Chamakh is one of the player who needs to prove himself in the preseason, and he is yet to do it. Played poorly against Malaysia, he is dropped to the bench on this match, only to be introduced on the second half. He did make some good link up with the midfield, however, he failed to do what striker should do, scored goal, and threated opposition's goal. His presence in the Manchester City's penalty area, beside one backheel pass to Craig Eastmond, is unnoticed, and failed to test opposition's keeper once.
With this kind of form, he is yet to be ready of Arsenal's first team spot. With Park Ju-Yong getting regular football on Olympic, he could even be behind Park Ju-Yong if Park could rediscover his form.
GOODs
1. Some of Youngsters are Promising
Kyle Bartley, Francis Coquelin, Chuks Aneke, and especially Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain are some of the youngsters played in this match that quite impressively played.
Kyle Bartley was quite solid on the backline, and made one brilliant stop against outstanding Yaya Toure. Chuks Aneke, who scored the winning goal against Malaysia, was lively after his introduction, while Coquelin ventured all the field, despite almost costing Arsenal one goal after failed to catch up with Aguero in City's counterattack. Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain was one of the reason why Arsenal played much better after the break.
Aside from the youngsters from this match, there are still some promising talents in the squad. Henri Lansbury scored the winning goal against Anderlecht. Thomas Eisfeld, despite struggled in this match, played well in a match before, against Malaysia. Ryo Miyaichi played well last season in Bolton, despite his team being relegated.
2. Diaby could give another dimension to Arsenal's midfield
The long-waited player finally available again for selection. Abou Diaby was disrupted by injuries last season, and almost not featured in all Arsenal's first team last season. But this season could be different, he is fit now, and could offer something different for Arsenal, compared to other midfielder. He is tall, strong, and has a good technique. Could be said, he is like a more offensive version of Patrick Vieira, if he could play at his best.
He is different from the other Arsenal's midfielder who is mostly technical, without too much strength, and could give something more dimension in Arsenal's midfield.

Giroud moves to Emirates Stadium, and then?
Arsenal FC confirms move for Montpellier striker, Olivier Giroud, and become the second signing for Arsenal side, after German International Lukas Podolski, who recently got his 100th cap in Euro 2012. Olivier Giroud was the top scorer of Ligue 1 last season with 21 goals scored, and was picked by Laurent Blanc to Euro 2012. However, he wasn't the first eleven, being the deputy for Real Madrid ace, Karim Benzema, and appears only as a substitute in three match, and only being on the pitch for around 30 minutes. Giroud joins the Gunners in a move reportedly around 12 million euro, according to Sky Sports.
Giroud is known as a powerful striker who has good aerial ability.

Junior Hoillet from Blackburn would be a rather crazy move, remembering that Arsenal has a lot of Winger, but it's still possible if Wenger wants to offload Theo Walcott, whose contract only remaining one year.
Giroud's French teammate, Yann M'Vila could join Arsenal this summer. Yann M'Vila has expressed his interest in Arsenal move. Arsenal also has been linked heavily to the Rennes midfielder.

Wenger now should have enough firepower upfront, and there was suggestion for the Professor to revert back to 4-4-2 formation Arsenal deployed before Emmanuel Adebayor's departure to Man. City on 2009.

However, with arrival of Olivier Giroud, as well as the possibility of Robin van Persie heading out from Emirates Stadium, the target man spot could be given to the Frenchman, as he offer more aerial threat than van Persie, and more like an orthodox striker, compared to van Persie, who often plays deep to take the ball from the midfield.
If Robin van Persie stays, Olivier Giroud might be benched, but in my opinion, he is far too good to be benched. Maybe Robin van Persie could be given a deeper role in attacking midfielder role, but Tomas Rosicky was stellar in that position last season. Another problem for the deeper role of Robin van Persie is the abundance of central midfielder in Arsenal. Wilshere, Rosicky, Arteta, Song, Coquelin, Frimpong, Diaby, Denilson, Ramsey; meaning 9 midfielders fighting for 2 spots. This could be a dillema for Arsene Wenger.

Imperfect Performance, but the Result is Just 'Perfect'
Arsenal just got enough result to secure the third place with the 3-2 win against West Brom on The Hawthorns. Arsenal finished the Campaign with 70 points, a point ahead North London rival, Tottenham Hotspurs, who beat Fulham 2-0 on the same day. Robin van Persie also sealed the top-scorer spot, despite not scoring any in this match.
Arsenal made three changes prior to the match agaisnt Norwich City. Jenkinson replaced broken-leg Bacary Sagna, while Andre Santos replaced Kieran Gibbs on the left back. Francis Coquelin replaced Aaron Ramsey to allow Alex Song plays in the more advanced role.
Arsenal took lead when West Brom keeper Marten Fulop hesitantly took the backpass, and Yossi Benayoun stole the ball and put the ball into the empty net. Despite getting the lead first, poor display by Arsenal defenders let West Brom equalized via Shane Long - despite being in offside position before receiving the ball - , and they even turn the game after Glen Dorrans smashed the ball to the bottom corner of Szczesny's goal. That goal woke Arsenal's side, and they began to dominate the game, passing the ball around, despite lacking of final ball. Gervinho made some good runs into the penalty area, but his delivery was ineffective. Benayoun had one great chance in front of the goal, but West Brom defender could made a terrific block just outside the six yard box. West Brom, in other hand, always looked dangerous on counter attack, and Arsenal looked very vulnerable, especially via right back slot who occupied by Carl Jenkinson, as well as from set pieces. UCL spots competition is getting more and more interesting, and unpredictable
Tottenham and Newcastle closed the gap between third placed Arsenal, after winning the last match, 4-1 against Bolton and 2-0 against Chelsea respectively, both away games.
Few predicted Newcastle would came back from Stamford Bridge with a victory. First, Chelsea had been superb recently, beating Barcelona in the Champions League and trashing Tottenham on the FA Cup. Newcastle just lost 0-4 on Wigan's home last week, while Chelsea enjoyed 6-1 home victory against QPR, where Fernando Torres scored his first hattrick. Well, football is not mathematics, so as we know, Newcastle beat the host by two magnificent - and rather unbelievable - Pappis Cisse's brace.
With this result, Tottenham stands in fourth place, and Newcastle in the 5th place, just with goal difference between them. Both of them are just one point away from Arsenal, who sits on the third place. Chelsea are four points away from the fourth place, but would be able to qualify to the Champions League, should they beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, leaving the fourth placed team in Premier League advanced to Europa League instead of Champions League. Arsenal is still on the driving seat with one point advantage, but should they complacent and dropped more points, they will ended outside big four and means no Champions League football next season.

Looking for the remaining fixtures, Arsenal and Tottenham get the opponent that mathematically they are able to beat. Arsenal welcomes Norwich this weekend, before traveling to the Hawhtorns, West Bromwich to face WBA, while Tottenham have Aston Villa and Fulham for their final two opponents. Newcastle have the toughest fixtures, welcoming league leader Manchester City in their stadium and an away games to in-form Everton in the final day, who comfortably sits in 7th place. Chelsea would have one tough game against two-faced Liverpool on Anfield, and closed the season with the home game against relegation threatened team, Blackburn.
However, Premier League has been really unpredictable, adding some exciting reason to follow it. Some of unpredictable wins and defeats occured. Wigan knocked Arsenal in Emirates 2-1 and trashing Newcastle 4-0, after losing controversially against Chelsea and overplayed Man. United. Fulham beating Wigan on Craven Cottage, and Liverpool on Anfield, Norwich beating Tottenham in Hart Lane, and on-fire Chelsea just lost against Newcastle. No one would be sure how the Premier League would ended, anything still could happen.
The race for the Champions League spots is likely to be tight and tense, until the very last moment of it, unlike the previous season, where the teams qualifying to Champions League already settled in this phase of competition. No teams could afford to drop more points if they want to play in the highest competition in Europe. Even if Arsenal winning plus Tottenham and Newcastle drop the point in gameweek 37, the later two names would still have to battle for the fourth place. Even if one of them already got the fourth place, they still could lose the place, should Chelsea win the Champions League. Any fourth placed team in EPL - except if Chelsea somehow manage to climb to 4th place, surely will pray so Chelsea won't win the Champions League.
Few predicted Newcastle would came back from Stamford Bridge with a victory. First, Chelsea had been superb recently, beating Barcelona in the Champions League and trashing Tottenham on the FA Cup. Newcastle just lost 0-4 on Wigan's home last week, while Chelsea enjoyed 6-1 home victory against QPR, where Fernando Torres scored his first hattrick. Well, football is not mathematics, so as we know, Newcastle beat the host by two magnificent - and rather unbelievable - Pappis Cisse's brace.
With this result, Tottenham stands in fourth place, and Newcastle in the 5th place, just with goal difference between them. Both of them are just one point away from Arsenal, who sits on the third place. Chelsea are four points away from the fourth place, but would be able to qualify to the Champions League, should they beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, leaving the fourth placed team in Premier League advanced to Europa League instead of Champions League. Arsenal is still on the driving seat with one point advantage, but should they complacent and dropped more points, they will ended outside big four and means no Champions League football next season.

Looking for the remaining fixtures, Arsenal and Tottenham get the opponent that mathematically they are able to beat. Arsenal welcomes Norwich this weekend, before traveling to the Hawhtorns, West Bromwich to face WBA, while Tottenham have Aston Villa and Fulham for their final two opponents. Newcastle have the toughest fixtures, welcoming league leader Manchester City in their stadium and an away games to in-form Everton in the final day, who comfortably sits in 7th place. Chelsea would have one tough game against two-faced Liverpool on Anfield, and closed the season with the home game against relegation threatened team, Blackburn.
However, Premier League has been really unpredictable, adding some exciting reason to follow it. Some of unpredictable wins and defeats occured. Wigan knocked Arsenal in Emirates 2-1 and trashing Newcastle 4-0, after losing controversially against Chelsea and overplayed Man. United. Fulham beating Wigan on Craven Cottage, and Liverpool on Anfield, Norwich beating Tottenham in Hart Lane, and on-fire Chelsea just lost against Newcastle. No one would be sure how the Premier League would ended, anything still could happen.
The race for the Champions League spots is likely to be tight and tense, until the very last moment of it, unlike the previous season, where the teams qualifying to Champions League already settled in this phase of competition. No teams could afford to drop more points if they want to play in the highest competition in Europe. Even if Arsenal winning plus Tottenham and Newcastle drop the point in gameweek 37, the later two names would still have to battle for the fourth place. Even if one of them already got the fourth place, they still could lose the place, should Chelsea win the Champions League. Lukas Podolski, tactical review and possibility on Arsenal
Arsenal confirmed the signing of FC Cologne's striker Lukas Podolski on an undisclosed fee in their official website. Podolski was Arsenal's first signing for next season and he will join Arsenal after the Euro 2012.

Lukas Podolski would add some reinforcement for Arsenal's attacking firepower, where they were too dependent on their captain, Robin van Persie. Gervinho, one of the biggest signings on the summer to help van Persie upfront is yet to show his maximum capabilities, with some awful finishing in front of goal, despite showing some glimpse of technique.
The signing of German striker, who is also capable of playing on the left wing, could persuade Robin van Persie to stay in Arsenal, following his statement requesting signing of world class players for the club. However, where will Podolski fit on Arsenal FC next season?

This formation would allow only one player playing on the central forward, and should van Persie stay in Arsenal, the captain would be guaranteed one position on the central forward, and Lukas Podolski would play on the left wing, like what he did in German National Team for recent years. He could be like Robert Pires or Freddie Ljungberg, winger with a high goalscoring rate, and with tendency to drive trough opposition's defence, instead of crossing. Podolski is also known for this cannon left-footed shot. With the introduction of Lukas Podolski on the right wing, Gervinho would sit on the bench, or switched to the right flank with Theo Walcott not included in the starting eleven.

1. Familiar formation on the last three years. The players already used to play in this formation.
2. This formation gives more rooms for midfielder, as Arsenal have a lot of central midfielder, as well as defensive midfielder. At least 9 midfielder Arsenal have, assuming Wenger is not selling anyone (Song, Coquelin, Frimpong, Arteta, Wilshere, Diaby, Denilson, Ramsey, Rosicky).
CONS :
1. van Persie might be dropping deep to the middle and no one playing on the opposition penalty's area
2. This formation has tendency to be leakable through the wing, as the winger plays too advanced.

Not a bad result nor good, but this shows Arsenal's weakness
Arsenal is hold 1-1 in Brittania Stadium in a match against Stoke City. The host took lead after Peter Crouch headed home. Arsenal replied few minutes after that, with Robin van Persie equalized, tapping Tomas Rosicky's crossing. It was not the best result Arsenal could get, as they dropped two points. However, Brittania Stadium is never easy for Wenger's boy to win, just winning once since Stoke City promoted to the Premier League. Arsenal always struggled to cope with physical game of Stoke City.
How was the game?
However, today, it was Arsenal who had most possession. Arsenal started brightly, with Benayoun nearly opened the score, but his shot just too weak. However, it was the home side who opened the score by Peter Crouch. Nice crossing from the left wing found Peter Crouch, and he did perfect job to net the ball, leaving Wojciech Szczesny rooted on the spot. Robin van Persie scored his 28th goal of the Premier League this season, after a nice determination shown by Yossi Benayoun on the left wing, winning back the ball, and passed it to Tomas Rosicky. "The Little Mozard" sent a wonderful floating ball to the captain, and van Persie made no mistake to make it 1-1. Arsenal had some chances in front of goal, particularly Gervinho's missed header, and two wonderful header from the van Persie. But Asmir Begovic produced superb save to deny Robin van Persie. Gervinho had two chances, but none of them finding the net. Koscielny headed once from Robin van Persie but it was also over the bar.
On the second half, Arsenal dominate most of the game, but failed to create clear chances in the final third. Vermaelen and Ramsey shot wide from the target, while van Persie and Vermaelen also blocked by Stoke's resilient defence. Arsenal had some shouts of penalty but all of them ignored by the referee. One from Shawcross' brave challenge on Benayoun, one from Benayoun again distracted from behind, and handball by Stoke player on Vermalen's fierce shot. However, it was Stoke even went close on scoring goal. Cameron Jerome tried his luck from the narrow angle to test Szczesny, but the keeper made a great reflect. Sagna need to clear the ball on Rory Delap's dangerous throw in, before Jonathan Walter missed 1-on-1 chance. In the end, Stoke 1 Arsenal 1

Yossi Benayoun showed a great determination and aggresivity, and he might be permanently sold to Arsenal next summer. Rosicky remained a good dirigent in Arsenal's midfield, and Ramsey, who was injured on the same ground, showed some neat passes, and ambition to shot from the outside, despite not meeting the target. He wasn't afraid to make some challenge to Stoke's player.

On the other hand, Arsenal showed his old illness, lack of creativity against defensive teams. Stoke was great in defending, they pulled some last ditch block, as well as well as nice saves from Asmir Begovic. However, Arsenal didn't create many chances in the second half, compared to the first half. They were missing Arteta who has fierce long shot, or even Wilshere's ability to play the ball. Gervinho was ineffective in front of goal, despite making use of his pace well. Wenger's decision not to play Chamberlain raised eyebrows. Arsenal were lacking of creativity, but Wenger played centre-forward Marouane Chamakh, who was in goal drought since September. Chamakh didn't play too badly in this game. Of course, he lacked of time to show his skill by just entering the fray 10 minutes from the normal time. But, he did make some neat touches. He didn't even get any service to threaten the goal. Gunners overclassed Man City
Arsenal bounced back from 2-1 defeat at QPR last week to grab a deserved win 1-0 against Man. City in Emirates Stadium and virtually ended City's title hope. A stunning goal from Arteta's trademark thunderous shot was enough for Arsenal to earn three points and leapfrog local rival Tottenham Hotspurs, who drew against Sunderland 0-0 yesterday. Arsenal now holds two points advantage over Spurs, and five over Chelsea. While Man City is now 8 points behind leader Man. United with just 6 match to go, and their title chances is evaporating now.
It was a perfect result for Arsenal, where they keep the advantage over Spurs and Chelsea in the race of third spot. It was also a proof of good mentality of Wenger's boys, where they reacted brilliantly to last week defeat. A poor display in Lotfus Road seemed had no effect to this match, where they comfortably controlled the game on almost all the match. Arsenal dominated the middle of the park, and with handful of chances they could've scored more.
Arsenal should've opened their goal account when van Persie's effort accidentally blocked by Thomas Vermaelen on first half. Lady of Luck seemed to smile at City when Robin van Persie's clever header on second half also just hit the post, and Theo Walcott's low shot just hit the other post of Joe Hart, and Vermaelen cannot get enough to rebound the ball. However, even luck cannot help City out of conceding, when Arteta struck the ball to the bottom corner of City's goal.
Rosicky, Arteta, and Song bossed the midfield, flowing the ball from the rear to the front. Rosicky were as lively as always, and Song's trademark flick were almost becoming assist, had the assistant referee not raise the offside flag on Robin van Persie. Robin van Persie wasn't really lively, but he was dangerous whenever he got chances, and should've awarded by goal in this match. Bakary Sagna was really solid against Balotelli, linked up well with Theo Walcott, and showed what Arsenal had been missed when he was injured. Koscielny and Vermaelen were strong wall in Arsenal's heart of defence, and they were not really troubled by Aguero. The only defect was just Ramsey's unperfect finish in the end of the match, after Arsenal made brilliant breakthrough via counterattack.
In the other hand, City weren't too good in creative department, with Szczesny just forced to make two important actions : one smart rushing out from City's wonderful through pas and one tip over the bar, but aside that two chances, were largely untroubled, and seems his kicking has been improving. They were nowhere to win this match. Balotelli was not the Balotelli we saw when City thrashed Man. United 6-1, and Tevez was unable to provide matchwinner like against Chelsea. Milner and Barry struggled to hold the force of trio Rosicky - Arteta - Song.
